Geolocation Accuracy Limitations

IP geolocation is useful, but it is not GPS. Accuracy varies by provider, network type, and region.

Factors that reduce accuracy

  • Mobile carrier gateways may appear far from the user
  • Corporate VPNs and proxies mask the true origin
  • Databases update on different schedules
  • Anycast services may show a distant PoP location

Responsible use

Use geolocation for approximate localization, fraud signals, and content defaults — not for legal proof of physical presence.

IPLocator clearly labels location data as approximate and continues working when provider lookups fail.
