How IP Geolocation Works

IP geolocation estimates the geographic location of an internet-connected device using its public IP address.

Where the data comes from

Geolocation providers aggregate information from:

• Regional Internet Registries (RIRs)
• ISP allocation records
• Latency and routing measurements
• User-contributed correction data

No single source provides perfect accuracy for every IP address.

What geolocation can and cannot do

Geolocation is generally useful for:

• Country or city-level content localization
• Fraud and abuse detection signals
• Timezone-aware defaults

It is not reliable for:

• Exact street addresses
• Legal proof of physical location
• Device-level GPS replacement

How IPLocator uses geolocation

IPLocator.org calls a configurable server-side geolocation provider. API keys never reach the browser.

If the provider is unavailable, IPLocator still shows your detected IP address and keeps educational content available.
