What Is an IP Address?
An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a numeric label assigned to every device connected to a network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication.
Why IP addresses exist
When you visit a website, send an email, or stream a video, data must know where to go and where to return. IP addresses provide that routing information, similar to a postal address for digital packets.
IPv4 and IPv6
Most people are familiar with IPv4 addresses such as 192.168.1.10. IPv4 uses 32 bits, which limits the total number of available addresses.
IPv6 was introduced to solve address exhaustion. IPv6 addresses are longer and written in hexadecimal groups, such as 2001:db8::1.
Public vs private addresses
- Private addresses are used inside home or office networks.
- Public addresses are visible on the internet and are what IPLocator detects when you use our tools.
Private ranges include 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12, and 192.168.0.0/16.
What IPLocator shows
When you use IPLocator.org, we detect your public IP address as seen by our server and optionally show approximate geolocation based on provider data.
