What Is DNS?

The Domain Name System (DNS) is often described as the phone book of the internet. It maps domain names such as iplocator.org to IP addresses that computers use to route traffic.

Why DNS matters

People remember names better than numbers. DNS lets you type a domain into your browser while the network resolves the correct server address behind the scenes.

• A — IPv4 address
• AAAA — IPv6 address
• MX — mail server
• NS — authoritative name server
• TXT — text records used for verification and policy
